Zero attendance, full salary: Madhya Pradesh cop gets paid without reporting for duty even once in 12 years; draws Rs 28 lakh

BHOPAL: In a case of administrative oversight, a constable appointed to the Madhya Pradesh Police in 2011 has allegedly drawn over Rs 28 lakh in salary over the past 12 years — without reporting for duty even once.According to officials, the constable, originally posted to Bhopal and assigned for basic training in Sagar, never turned up at the training centre. Instead, he quietly returned to his hometown in Vidisha shortly after appointment.Due to a severe lapse in communication and departmental monitoring, his prolonged absence went unnoticed, and his name remained active in official records. As a result, his salary continued to be credited to his bank account for over a decade. The fraud came to light only in 2023 during a routine pay-scale revision, when discrepancies in his service records triggered red flags. Upon being confronted, the constable submitted documents claiming he was undergoing psychiatric treatment during the entire period. He was briefly posted to Nehru Nagar Police Line but was suspended shortly after a preliminary inquiry confirmed the long-standing absence.A departmental probe headed by ACP Ankita Khatarkar has been underway for the last 10 months. The case has raised serious questions about internal checks and the functioning of the personnel management system within the police department.DCP (Headquarters) Shraddha Tiwari said action would be taken not just against the errant constable but also against officials responsible for the lapse. “This is a serious matter of administrative negligence. Disciplinary action will be initiated against all those involved,” she said.
