Xbox Game Pass Kiln release date is April 23: Experience chaotic pottery battles, team strategy, and physics-based multiplayer combat |
The next addition to Xbox Game Pass is beginning to take shape, and it looks quite different from the usual lineup. Kiln, the latest title from Double Fine Productions, is now confirmed to launch on April 23, 2026 according to official Xbox Wire. It will be available on Game Pass on the same day. This “day one” release approach has become fairly common since Microsoft acquired the studio in 2019, and Kiln appears to follow that pattern.
Xbox’s Kiln brings pottery battles to multiplayer matches
Kiln does not resemble a typical fighting game in any conventional sense. Players create pottery vessels, which serve as their in-game characters. These designs directly influence gameplay by shaping stats and abilities during matches. The matches revolve around a mode called Quench, where teams of four players compete against each other. The objective is to carry water to the opposing team’s kiln and extinguish the fire. This may sound simple, but the gameplay appears to be quite chaotic, as vessels collide, break, and disrupt each other using physics-based combat.Kiln reportedly began as an internal experiment at Double Fine around 2017. It started as a small and rough concept before gradually evolving into a full project. This extended development period appears to have allowed the idea to mature, even though it remains unconventional.
Game Pass allows players to jump into Kiln
Since becoming part of Microsoft, Double Fine has consistently released its titles directly onto Game Pass. Psychonauts 2 followed this approach, as did Keeper. Kiln continues this same strategy. For players, this approach reduces the barrier to entry, as there is no need for an upfront purchase. Instead, players can simply download the game and try it.
Early access and what players can expect
Before its official release, Kiln is scheduled to run a series of playtests. An open beta is expected to take place from April 9 to April 11. These early sessions appear to be focused on PC players, most likely through Steam. The full release will be available across multiple platforms, including Xbox Series X and Series S, PlayStation 5, and PC, confirms Xbox Wire.
