‘Wrongly labelled as cardiac arrest’: Sunjay Kapur’s mother questions polo match death; calls it no 'freak accident'

NEW DELHI: Rani Kapur, mother of late billionaire industrialist Sunjay Kapur, has raised serious questions about the circumstances surrounding her son’s sudden death in London last month. In a statement, she claimed the incident — reported as a cardiac arrest during a polo match — is being wrongly labelled, alleging that the truth may be ‘far more troubling.“For my client, as a mother, it’s deeply painful to watch this being dismissed as a mere freak accident and cardiac arrest. The truth doesn’t match the headlines,” said her legal counsel, senior advocate Vaibhav Gaggar.“She would not stay silent until that truth is acknowledged,” he added.Rani Kapur has alleged that shortly after her son’s death, she was pressured into signing certain documents while under emotional distress. She has now called for the cancellation of the Sona Group’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), scheduled for today, warning against the appointment of new directors amid the ongoing circumstances. Her legal representative, Gaggar, confirmed that while no legal proceedings have been initiated at this time, she has requested a deferment of the AGM and reserves all her legal rights.Sunjay Kapur, chairman of Sona Comstar, reportedly passed away after suffering a heart attack while playing polo in London on June 12, 2025. His final rites were held at Lodhi Road Cremation Ground in South Delhi on June 19, attended by close family and friends.Sunjay Kapur was previously married to actress Karisma Kapoor in 2003. The couple had two children—Samaira (born 2005) and Kiaan (born 2011). They filed for divorce in 2014 and officially parted ways in 2016. Post-divorce, Sunjay married Priya Sachdev, with whom he has a son, Azarias.(With inputs from agencies)
