BAREILLY: A groom in Sambhal landed in police custody on Saturday night after the bride refused to marry him, claiming he was drunk during the ceremony. Amit Rana alleged his friends had mixed alcohol in his soft drink without his knowledge.The incident took place in Mulheta village under Bahjoi police station limits, during the wedding of Kumari Shashi, daughter of farmer Khesari Lal. The groom, a trader’s son from Amroha, arrived with the wedding procession around 11.30pm. During rituals at the bride’s doorstep, he began behaving strangely. The bride, accusing him of being intoxicated, called off the wedding.“She said she wouldn’t marry someone who couldn’t stay sober on his wedding day, calling him ‘useless’,” said a police official.The bride’s family alleged the entire baarat was drunk and refused to relent despite the groom’s family trying to persuade them. A meeting between elders followed, but the bride remained firm.As the dispute escalated, police detained the groom and a relative. “Most of the guests in the procession were drunk. Upon seeing the groom intoxicated, my sister refused to marry as she didn’t want to spend her life in such a family,” said the bride’s brother, Kishanpal.Amit, meanwhile, claimed he was tricked. “My friends secretly gave me alcohol. I didn’t know it was spiked,” he told police. SHO Bahjoi Harish Kumar said, “Both parties were brought to the station where mediation was done, but finally the marriage was called off. No formal complaint was filed. They returned each other’s gifts.”
