UP shocker: Jilted lover shoots girlfriend dead, kills self in Kannauj using father’s licensed gun; FIR registered

KANPUR: A 25-year-old man shot his girlfriend dead before taking his own life in Kannauj during the early hours of Monday. His body was found near a pond, while the woman was discovered in her room.A licensed firearm belonging to the youth’s father was located near his body. The incident occurred in Sultanpur village within the Saurikh police station’s jurisdiction.SP Vinod Kumar and police forces arrived at the location upon notification. Both bodies were sent for post-mortem examination. Deepti, aged 22, Ashok’s daughter from Sultanpur village, was involved with Devansh, aged 25, son of Mahipal Singh from the neighbouring Kuthila village.Deepti’s family arranged her marriage elsewhere a fortnight ago, which provoked Devansh to harass her. A village panchayat convened the day before the incident, where Devansh expressed remorse and vowed to cease bothering Deepti. Their acquaintance began three years prior at a village wedding, leading to regular mobile communications. Upon discovering their relationship, Deepti’s family arranged her marriage to Anikesh from Chitta village, under Erwa Katra police station in Auraiya, who operates a medical store in Talgram.Upon learning of the arranged marriage, Devansh confronted Anikesh at his store, issuing threats against the marriage. Anikesh informed Deepti’s father, resulting in a panchayat meeting on Sunday in Nagla Bhajun village between both families. Although Devansh pledged to sever ties with Deepti, he took his father’s licensed 12-bore gun around 4am on Monday and visited Deepti’s house.Devansh shot Deepti, who was sleeping on the terrace with her younger sister, fatally wounding her head. After the family rushed to the terrace upon hearing the gunshot, Devansh fled and subsequently took his own life near a village pond. SP Vinod Kumar, ASP Ajay Kumar, and other officials arrived at the scene, securing the bodies for post-mortem. They recovered a licensed firearm and shell casings near Devansh’s body.Devansh, a class XII graduate, worked in agriculture with his father, a retired army soldier. His family has been on the run since the incident, with police conducting searches. The firearm used belonged to Devansh’s father and was taken without notice. The village remains in mourning. According to villagers, Devansh’s actions stemmed from rejection and Deepti’s arranged marriage. SP Vinod Kumar confirmed the police investigation and FIR registration. Deepti, a final-year BSc student, leaves behind a younger sister and brother. Her father works as an electricity department lineman in Talgram. Devansh’s family includes two brothers and two sisters.
