NAGPUR: Ripples ran through the city’s underworld following the accidental death on Friday of a gangster’s wife, who was in an illicit relationship with another member of the gang, triggering a deadly rift in the notorious Ippa gang of Central Nagpur. At least 40 armed goons have fanned out across the city and suburban Kamptee to kill Arshad Topi, who snapped ties with the rest of the pack to make the mafia’s wife his mistress. Suspecting he may have murdered his wife, the gangster was desperate to bump off their friend-turned-foe before police intervened, said top sources. Fearing death, Arshad Topi chose to take shelter at deputy commissioner of police’s office at Pardi. “The mafia king opened the hotline with other city gangs for inputs and backup to exact revenge on his former aide. An underworld informer tipped off cops and police stations across the city were activated,” said a police officer. The turmoil began Thursday when Arshad Topi was secretly meeting his 29-year-old mistress, defying explicit warnings to end the affair. While riding a two-wheeler near Suradevi temple behind Koradi Mata temple, a JCB machine hit them in a desolate area. The woman, who was riding pillion, suffered critical injuries, while Arshad escaped with minor wounds.

A patrol vehicle from the Koradi thermal power plant rushed the woman to a private hospital, but she was denied admission. A second hospital in Kamptee too refused treatment. This is when Arshad returned from the shadows and paid an ambulance driver to take her to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). On Friday morning, the woman died, sending shockwaves through Ippa gang.CCTV footage from the private hospital showed Arshad accompanying the injured woman. Soon, Ippa gang members vowed to kill Arshad for betraying their trust, plunging the city’s underworld into disarray.Arshad sought refuge at the office of Zonal DCP Niketan Kadam in Pardi, where he pleaded for protection. Kadam, aware of Ippa gang’s notoriety, sent Arshad to Koradi police station, where his statement was recorded. “Arshad sought protection, but was reluctant to register a formal case,” said Kadam. To prevent violence, Kadam coordinated with Zonal DCP Rahul Madane, whose jurisdiction covers the Ippa gang’s turf, to warn the goons against retaliation. Kadam clarified that the accident appeared genuine, with no evidence of foul play, a message conveyed to the gang to de-escalate tensions. Arshad remained at Koradi police station till late Friday but left, believing the threat had subsided. However, the crime branch, Tehsil, and Koradi police remain on high alert, working to ensure Arshad’s safety and prevent bloodshed on the streets.
