THE Business and Economics Rankings 2026: MIT, Stanford, and Oxford top the list

Business and economics are the core of the world of decision-making. It is these two areas that have a significant impact on the functioning of economies and the response of societies to change. The rankings include business and management, accounting and finance, and economics and econometrics.

Ranking first overall, MIT topped the list with a well-rounded performance on all criteria. The research quality score of 90.4 in MIT indicates a stable citation impact in economics and management studies. The industry score of 99.7 in the university, the highest among the top five, indicates a strong interaction with industries. Performance in teaching (94.3) and a strong research environment (95.0) further strengthened its position.at

Stanford University (US)

Ranking second, Stanford University impressed with its teaching score of 96.7, the highest in this category. A research quality score of 90.2 suggests stable research impact, and an industry score of 84.2 suggests steady, though relatively modest, business involvement. The performance of Stanford University indicates robustness based on learning achievements coupled with steady research output.

Tsinghua University (China)

At third place, Tsinghua University showed how institutional support can influence global position. The research environment score of 97.5 indicates excellent funding, facilities, and talent. Tsinghua University also achieved a perfect industry score of 100.0, which emphasizes close links with industry and applied research. Although its research quality score of 80.6 lags behind some Western rivals, the overall picture shows swift integration of research prowess.

University of Oxford (UK)

Ranked fourth, the University of Oxford scored well in the areas associated with global engagement. The international outlook score of 94.0 indicates collaboration and faculty diversity across borders. The score of 98.2 in research environment, the highest among the top five universities, reflects scale and depth. The scores for research quality (76.8) reflect influence diffused over a broad volume of output rather than citation impact.

University of California, Berkeley (US)

Rounding out the top five, UC Berkeley had the highest research quality score in this group with a score of 91.5, reflecting a high citation impact and research influence in economics and other areas. Its teaching score of 92.0 and research environment score of 91.5 reflect a good balance, although its industry score of 85.7 is somewhat lower.
