‘Teach her a lesson’: Tripura woman tied, hair chopped off over affair charge; BJP leaders accused of instigation | Agartala News

AGARTALA: A housewife named Purnima Das was publicly tortured after being accused of having an extramarital affair in Gomati district, Tripura’s Udaipur. On Friday, a group of women tied her hands and feet and forcibly cut her hair in full public view, while local residents stood by, recording videos instead of intervening. Shockingly, the incident was allegedly instigated by BJP booth president Nitai Dutta and local BJP leader Seema Begum, who are accused of leading the mob to the victim’s house. Witnesses allege that both leaders not only encouraged the act but also mocked the victim during the torture. The victim’s husband, Swapan Das, and her in-laws reportedly did not oppose the mob attack. Villagers claimed that the humiliation was carried out to “teach her a lesson” over a past family dispute involving allegations of extramarital relations. The disturbing video of the incident surfaced on social media on Sunday, sparking widespread outrage and condemnation. Civil society groups and locals have demanded immediate police action against those responsible, describing the act as “medieval barbarity” that has once again tarnished Udaipur’s image. Following the outcry, personnel from Radhakishorpur Police Station rushed to the spot. However, instead of taking action against the alleged masterminds, police reportedly booked the victim’s relatives—Manju Rani Das, Putul Rani Das, and Hameda Begum—at the RK Pur Women’s Police Station. Meanwhile, the victim’s husband Swapan Das was taken to the police station on Sunday night, while those accused of instigating the mob remain untouched.
