‘Taken up strongly’: Trespassing and vandalism at Indian embassy in Croatia— what MEA said | India News
NEW DELHI: India on Thursday condemned an incident of “trespassing and vandalism” at its embassy in Croatia’s capital, Zagreb, and said it had raised the matter strongly with the Croatian authorities. The ministry of external affairs said it had taken up the issue both in New Delhi and in Zagreb and asked the authorities to hold those responsible accountable for their actions.“We condemn the incident of trespassing and vandalism at our Embassy in Zagreb, Croatia by anti-India elements,” the ministry said in a statement. The MEA said that under the Vienna Convention, diplomatic premises are inviolable and must be protected.“Accordingly, we have taken up the matter strongly with Croatian authorities, both in New Delhi and in Zagreb and asked them to hold the perpetrators accountable for their reprehensible and illegal actions,” it said. The ministry added that such acts reflected the “character and motives” of those behind them and said that law enforcement agencies everywhere should take note.Last year in February, a group of people trespassed at the Indian Consulate in Seattle. The consulate said the individuals entered the premises after office hours and, despite repeated requests, refused to leave. It said they engaged in aggressive and threatening behaviour towards consulate staff, following which the consulate sought help from local authorities. The Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations (VCDR) is a 1961 international treaty that lays down the rules, privileges and immunities for diplomatic missions and their staff, ensuring they can carry out their duties without pressure or interference from host countries.
