What is ‘nihilist penguin’?
Primarily known as the “Nihilist Penguin” meme, also dubbed the “Lonely Penguin” or “Wandering Penguin”—the viral clip originates from German filmmaker Werner Herzog’s 2007 documentary on Antarctica. While it has circulated online for nearly two decades, it has only recently crystallised into a full-fledged meme.The scene shows a lone, seemingly disoriented penguin breaking away from its colony and heading toward the Antarctic interior, with distant mountains on the horizon. In the film, Herzog himself describes the journey as an ominous, one-way march—framed as a path leading almost certainly to death.Trump has repeatedly argued that Greenland should be absorbed into US territory for “security purposes,” citing concerns that allowing Russia or China closer access to the region could pose long-term strategic risks. His remarks have triggered sharp backlash from several countries, including key NATO members.In a separate post on Truth Social, Trump lashed out at Canada for opposing his proposed “Golden Dome” missile defence project over Greenland.
