Senior police officer apologises for blaming crime on farmers | Patna News

PATNA: Additional director general of police (headquarters), Kundan Krishnan, who triggered a major controversy by linking the rising crime graph in the state to the “agricultural lean season between April and June,” apologised for his remarks on Saturday but added he was “quoted out of context.“In a video message, Krishnan said he had “great respect for farmers who are our anndata” and blamed the whole controversy on the “distorted” representation of his remarks presented at a recent press conference.“What I meant to say was that the farmer brothers of our country, who are the ‘anndata’ (food givers), have nothing to do with the criminal incidents in any way and they deserve respect. My ancestors too were in the farming business, and I still maintain strong links with my roots, of which the farming community is a part. Still, if my statement hurt anyone’s sentiments, I regret it and tender an apology,” Krishnan said in his video message issued on Saturday.Stating that behind every criminal incident, there are only criminals, the ADG said the outlaws have no caste and religion. He said he issued a different statement over the law and situation in the state, but his statement was distorted, which created the whole controversy. The whole controversy was created after Krishnan, while addressing a press conference in Patna, blamed seasonal inactivity among farmers from April to June for the rise in crime. “The period from April to June reports a large number of criminal incidents since the farmers have no work. They get busy only after the rainy season starts,” was how Krishnan told the media. His remarks drew strong comments from the farming community, who accused the officer of tarnishing the image of the community that nourishes the nation.
