President Droupadi Murmu appoints  3 new governors: Kavinder Gupta in Ladakh; Prof Ghosh, Gajapathi Raju for Haryana and Goa

NEW DELHI: President Droupadi Murmu on Monday appointed Prof Ashim Kumar Ghosh as the governor of Haryana, Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju as governor of Goa and Kavinder Gupta as lieutenant governor of Ladakh.President Murmu also accepted the resignation of Brig (Dr) BD Mishra (Retd) as Lieutenant Governor of the union territory of Ladakh, former deputy chief minister of undivided Jammu and Kashmir Kavinder Gupta will replace him.Rashtrapati Bhavan made the announcements in an official notification. Prof Ghosh would take the place of Bandaru Dattatreya, who has been serving in the role since 2021, while Gajapathi Raju will serve in place of PS Sreedharan Pillai.

Who are the new appointees?

Kavinder Gupta

Kavinder Gupta, a senior BJP leader, served as the last deputy CM of undivided state of J&k which included Ladakh. Gupta went on to win Jammu mayoral elections for three consecutive terms between 2005-2010, a record for the city.

Prof Ashim Kumar Ghosh

Prof Ghosh is an academic and senior leader of BJP from the state of West Bengal. After completing his degree in political science from Vidyasagar College, Kolkata, he went on to serve as professor of political science for many years before joining politics.Ghosh joined BJP in 1991 and became BJP’s Bengal chief in 1999. During his tenure, he was instrumental in the expansion of BJP on the grassroots level in the state; he served in that position until 2003.

Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju

Belonging to Vizianagram royal family Pusapati in Andhra Pradesh, Gajapathi Raju is a senior leader of TDP. He served as civil aviation minister in PM Modi’s first cabinet from 2014 to 2018 when TDP left NDA over the issue of special status for Andhra Pradesh. Raju also was a seven-term MLA from Vizianagram.
