MEERUT: A man was arrested in Rampur district, Uttar Pradesh, on Monday for allegedly murdering a groom a day before his wedding, in what police said was an attempt to stop the marriage because he was in love with the bride-to-be, who did not reciprocate his feelings.Mohd Saddam, 26, of Bhot village, told police he killed Nihal, 25, of the Ganj area, to prevent his arranged marriage to Gulbasha of Dhanpura village. On Saturday, Saddam posed as Gulbasha’s cousin and called Nihal out of his house, saying he had clothes for him. When Nihal stepped out, two bike-borne men — one of them Saddam — picked him up and later strangled him.CO (city) Jitendra Kumar said Ganj Kotwali police identified Saddam from CCTV footage and arrested him. He confessed during questioning and named his accomplice, Mohd Farman, 24, who was riding the bike. Both were taken into custody.“Saddam confessed to dumping Nihal’s body in an agricultural field. The body was recovered from Azimnagar village. Nihal’s family had filed a missing person complaint after he failed to return that night,” Kumar said. An FIR has been registered against Saddam and his aide under sections for murder and destruction of evidence.Saddam later led police to Kesarpur to recover Nihal’s phone, which he said he had buried. There, he snatched head constable Gajendra’s pistol and opened fire on cops. He was shot in the leg in retaliatory firing, Kumar said.
