NEW DELHI: PM’s principal secretary PK Mishra Tuesday cautioned disaster management officials about growing challenges from extreme weather events and uncertainties, & asked states to recalibrate their institutions, and systems to handle such situations better and prevent loss of life and property.Speaking at the valedictory session of a two-day meeting of relief commissioners and national and state disaster response officials, Mishra said preparedness and awareness are crucial for tackling increasing uncertainty over natural disasters. “The hazard and vulnerability landscape is changing, so preparedness level of states has to be enhanced,” he said.“States must focus on solutions that are low on costs but have a high impact, to mitigate disaster risks. For instance, urban flooding solutions need to keep in mind the local geographical and climatic conditions,” he said. He stressed the need to involve communities to enhance the effectiveness of disaster response and reduce loss of lives and property. He urged officials to use data from Gati Shakti platform while making disaster management plans for states.
