MUMBAI: A 32-year-old chartered accountant died by suicide at his Santacruz home on Saturday after allegedly being blackmailed into paying Rs 2.5 crore over months to two persons he befriended on Instagram last year who threatened to make his intimate videos with them public. Vakola police on Monday lodged a case of abetment to suicide and extortion against the two suspects; they are yet to be arrested. The CA had earlier filed a complaint that the two had been threatening him.A police officer said the CA’s mother found three suicide notes stating that he was forced to withdraw money from the family’s savings as well as siphon off sums from his company’s account to pay off the suspects. Vakola police are looking into the company’s accounts for such withdrawals. The officer said a little after the CA went to sleep on Saturday, he called his mother, who found him throwing up. She sought help from the neighbours and rushed him to a hospital.Police learned from the mother that the CA had been depressed since the two suspects visited their home on June 7, and allegedly threatened to reveal his relationship with them and post intimate videos online. “They visited his home after he filed a complaint against them for repeatedly threatening him,” the officer said.In her complaint, the mother said: “I gained my son’s confidence and asked him to share the problem. He revealed that he befriended [the two suspects] in 2024 through social media. Since then, they had been extorting money from him, forcing him to transfer funds from his bank account.”Of the three suicide notes, one was addressed to his mother and the second to his company. In the third note, he held the two suspects responsible for his death. To seek help in times of distress, reach out to Ankahee Foundation from 4pm-10pm on all days on 8655486966 or email hello@ankaheehelpline.org.
