NEW DELHI: Bengali actor and BJP leader Joy Banerjee passed away at a private hospital in Kolkata on Monday at the age of 63, according to his family.Banerjee had been admitted to the hospital on August 15 with acute breathing problems and was diagnosed with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). His condition gradually deteriorated, and he had been on ventilator support for several days.The actor, who had also contested elections on a BJP ticket, died at 11:35 am. He is survived by his wife and mother.A matinee idol of the 1980s and 1990s, Joy Banerjee delivered a string of Tollywood hits, including Hirak Jayanti (1990), Milan Tithi (1985), and Nagmati (1983), along with the critically acclaimed Chopper (1986).He contested the 2014 and 2019 elections from the Birbhum and Uluberia constituencies on a BJP ticket but resigned from politics in November 2021.TMC MP Satabdi Roy, his co-actor in many films, said, “I am shattered. I knew Joy was ailing for quite some time, and we all were praying for his recovery.” Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar expressed his condolences over Banerjee’s untimely demise.(With inputs from agencies)
