‘India has become top supplier of smartphones to US’: Vaishnaw cites Rs 12 lakh crore electronics output; 99.2% of phones sold in India are made in India, shows data

NEW DELHI: Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Sunday said India has emerged as the leading supplier of smartphones to the United States, with electronics manufacturing in the country now valued at Rs 12 lakh crore.Speaking at the inauguration of metro projects in Bengaluru, Vaishnaw said India’s electronic production has grown sixfold in the past 11 years. He added that electronic exports have increased eightfold to Rs 3 lakh crore and noted India’s position as the world’s second-largest mobile phone manufacturer.

“Our electronic production has grown six times in the last 11 years. Today, electronics manufacturing has touched Rs 12 lakh crore. Electronic exports have increased by eight times… Today, it has grown to Rs 3 lakh crore. India has become the second-largest manufacturer of mobile phones in the world,” Vaishnaw said.According to official government data, India had only two mobile manufacturing units in 2014; today, there are over 300. In 2014-15, just 26% of mobile phones sold in India were made domestically, with the rest imported. Now, 99.2% of phones sold in India are manufactured locally. The value of mobile phone manufacturing has risen from Rs 18,900 crore in FY14 to Rs 4,22,000 crore in FY24.Vaishnaw said this growth reflects the government’s vision of making India a global hub for technology production and ensuring wider access to advanced electronics.Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off three new Vande Bharat trains, Ajni (Nagpur)-Pune, KSR Bengaluru-Belgavi, and Shree Mata Vaishnodevi Katra-Amritsar, from KSR Bengaluru railway station. With these additions, the total number of Vande Bharat trains has reached 150 (75 pairs), Vaishnaw said in a post on X.
