The third day of the first Test between India and England at Headingley began on a sombre note as players from both teams wore black armbands in honour of former England fast bowler David “Syd” Lawrence, who passed away recently. There was a moment’s applause before start of play on Day 3,” the BCCI posted on social media, alongside an image of the Indian team lined up in tribute.Lawrence, who died at the age of 61, was remembered not only for his raw pace and intensity on the field but also for his powerful advocacy off it. Born in Gloucester in 1964, he made his Test debut for England in 1988 and played five Tests and one ODI. His most notable performance came in 1991 when he claimed 5 for 106 against the West Indies at The Oval. His promising career was cut short by a horrific knee injury in 1992 during a Test match in New Zealand.
However, Lawrence’s influence went far beyond his playing days. As the first British-born Black player to represent England, he became a leading figure in the movement for diversity and inclusion in cricket. Diagnosed with motor neurone disease in 2024, Lawrence faced his illness with characteristic courage and transparency, helping to raise awareness about the condition. In 2025, he was awarded an MBE and named an Honorary Life Vice-President of the ECB.ECB Chair Richard Thompson described him as “a trailblazer of English cricket… whose legacy will endure in the hearts of all who love the game.”
