Marnus Labuschagne has set his sights firmly on forcing his way back into the Australian Test side for this year’s Ashes, declaring he is ready to take on the challenge of opening if that’s what it takes.The 31-year-old, featuring at No.3 for much of his career, was left out of the recent West Indies tour after an extended run of modest scores. He admitted that the omission stung, but that it also sparked an immediate shift in mindset.“You never want to be dropped,” Labuschagne told The Australian, as quoted by AP. “But as soon as the selectors said it, my mind went straight to, ‘Okay, how am I playing the Ashes … how do I make that happen?’”Instead of sitting on the setback, Labuschagne used the time away from the spotlight to the best. “It gave me an opportunity to reflect without the pressure of everyone saying, ‘Marnus has got to go’. I thrive on moments like this — proving people wrong and finding a way back,” he said.Labuschagne’s most recent Test outing came in June’s World Test Championship final against South Africa, where he was promoted to open but managed scores of 17 and 22. Despite that, he is willing to take the role if it means pulling on the Baggy Green again.“I’d be happy to do that — I’d love to,” he said. “If opener is where I need to bat to be in the Test team, that’s fine. I’ve batted at three my whole career, but at this stage, you don’t get a choice.”His willingness comes as teenager Sam Konstas, who took over the role, has struggled for consistency, while Cameron Green has settled in at No.3.Labuschagne will make his return to national colours in three home ODIs against South Africa this month before turning his attention to the Sheffield Shield. Strong domestic performances, he hopes, will convince selectors to bring him back for the five-Test Ashes series starting in Perth on November 21.
