In Hajipur, a key seat in Vaishali district, the main contest is between BJP’s Awadhesh Singh and RJD’s Deo Kumar Chaurasia, with Pratibha Sinha also in the fray as the candidate for Jan Suraaj. In the 2020 assembly election, BJP’s Awadhesh Singh narrowly defeated RJD’s Deo Kumar Chaurasia by just under 3,000 votes. Singh secured 85,552 votes (44.55%) while Chaurasia polled 82,562 (42.99%). Earlier, in 2015, Singh had won against Congress candidate Jagannath Prasad Rai by a margin of over 12,000 votes, underscoring the constituency’s consistent lean towards the BJP. Bihar has witnessed a record voter turnout of 67.13 per cent this year, the highest in its electoral history. Over 7.45 crore voters across 38 districts decided the fate of 2,616 candidates in two phases held on November 6 and 11. Notably, women voters outnumbered men in several districts, marking a significant shift in the state’s political engagement. The results will determine whether chief minister Nitish Kumar secures a record fifth term or if the INDIA bloc, led by RJD’s Tejashwi Yadav, stages a comeback. Early trends are expected to emerge by 9 am.
