Gujarat's Rs 2,548 crore urban makeover: Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar to see upgraded roads, six-lane expressway; PM Modi to inaugurate, lay foundation stones

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate and lay the foundation stones for urban development projects worth Rs 2,548 crore in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar on Monday and Tuesday.The initiative coincides with Gujarat celebrating the Urban Development Year and marks 20 years of the state’s urban development journey initiated by Modi as chief minister, said a press release Saturday.

Ahmedabad: Slum rehabilitation and modern infrastructure

In Ahmedabad, projects worth Rs 2,267 crore will be inaugurated:

  • Slum rehabilitation: AMC is rehabilitating 1,449 slums in Sector-3 of Ramapir Tekra under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban), costing over Rs 133 crore. The project includes common plots, Anganwadi, health centres, solar rooftops, and PNG gas connections.
  • Clean water projects: AUDA is implementing a 15-lakh-litre water pump, a Rs 7 crore pumping station, and a 23 km trunk main pipeline in Daskroi taluka, providing clean drinking water to 10 villages.
  • Infrastructure upgrades: PM Modi will lay foundation stones for storm water drainage systems, new water distribution stations, the four-lane Asarwa Railway Over Bridge, a mini sports complex at South Bopal, and road upgrades in TP Schemes 139/C, 141, 144.
  • Traffic modernisation: AUDA will upgrade the main four-lane road into a six-lane expressway with controlled access and construct a 32 km four-lane service road and a 30 km three-lane service road at Rs 1,624 crore to improve Ahmedabad’s traffic capacity and connectivity.

Gandhinagar: Water, sanitation, and drainage improvements

In Gandhinagar, PM Modi will inaugurate projects worth Rs 281 crore, including:

  • GMC projects (Rs 243 crore): Upgraded roads, improved sanitation, flood and waterlogging mitigation, and continuous clean drinking water supply. A new pipeline from Charedi Headworks to four elevated storage tanks at Pethapur and Rakheja, costing Rs 44 crore, will supply water to 55,000 residents.
  • GUDA projects (Rs 38 crore): Sewage treatment plants, pumping stations, and a village-level drainage network at Dabhoda, benefiting 17,000 people.
  • Additional infrastructure: PM Modi will lay foundation stones for storm water drainage at Pethapur, a road parallel to Metro Rail from Dholakuva to Pancheshwar Circle at Rs 72 crore, and water and sewer line upgrades at Koba, Raysan, and Randesa.

These projects aim to enhance urban infrastructure, improve ease of living, and strengthen the metropolitan outlook of Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, supporting Gujarat’s continued urban development.
