Google CEO Sundar Pichai shares ‘3 Bananas’: Here’s what they mean

Google recently unveiled nano banana AI photo editing tool for Gemini. CEO Sundar Pichai tweeted three emojis of three bananas on X (formerly Twitter) last evening, confirming the feature rollout. Notably, Nano Banana is the code’s name. The new AI photo editing tool by Google has been officially introduced as the Gemini 2.5 Flash Image. It is designed to make sure people, pets and objects look consistent across edits. In another post, Pichai shared a series of images of his dog Jeffree, edited with Google’s new AI tool. The photos honor the International Dog Day and reimagines Sundar Pichai’s dog Jeffree in different roles and scenarios – from surfing waves to donning a cowboy hat to superhero, and even dressing as a chef. “Our image editing model is now rolling out in @Geminiapp – and yes, it’s 🍌🍌. Top of @lmarena’s image edit leaderboard, it’s especially good at maintaining likeness across different contexts. Check out a few of my dog Jeffree in honor of International Dog Day – though don’t let these fool you, he definitely prefers the couch:),” Sundar Pichai wrote in the tweet.

The company shared a blog post, explaining how the new feature works. As explained by Google, users can upload a photo, describe what they want to change, and Gemini will create the new version while keeping the person’s original look intact. Edits can include:Costume and background changes: Place yourself in new outfits, jobs or even time periods.Photo blending: Merge multiple photos, like putting yourself and your pet in the same frame.Step-by-step edits: Add or remove objects in stages, such as redesigning a room with new colors and furniture.Design mixing: Apply textures and styles from one image to another, such as turning flower patterns into clothing designs.The blog post further states that all images created or edited in Gemini will carry a visible watermark and Google’s invisible SynthID digital watermark to show they are AI-generated. As mentioned above, the new nano banana image editing feature is available starting today in the Gemini app.
