PUNE: City police commissioner Amitesh Kumar Tuesday evening issued orders suspending an assistant inspector and four constables after a video of mutton biryani being served to gangster Gajanan alias Gaja Marne in a police van while being shifted from Yerawada central prison to Sangli district jail on March 3 went viral on social media. The video shows the constables serving biryani to Marne. Police had arrested Marne and his gang members on Feb 24 in connection with an assault on a software engineer during Shiv Jayanti celebrations on Feb 19 on Karve Road in Kothrud. Subsequently, police invoked the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) provisions against Marne, and he was lodged in the Yerawada jail. Kumar said, “It was decided to shift Marne to the Sangli jail to avert any trouble to him and avert provision of any special treatment to him in prison.”Police deployed a team of an assistant inspector and four constables from the crime branch to escort him to the Sangli jail. On the way, the team stopped at a roadside eatery near Satara and bought mutton biryani. The police party then took the biryani in the police van and served it to Marne. An officer said a high-end luxury car was also following the police van when the team was shifting Marne to Sangli.
