NEW DELHI: The prime accused in the double murder case of Majnu Ka Tila, Nikhil, was arrested from Haldwani in Uttarakhand on Wednesday. He was on the run since Tuesday afternoon after allegedly slitting the throats of his former live-in partner Sonal (22) and an infant.Police said that the accused killed his former live-in partner on suspicion of her having an affair with his friend and killed the 6-month-old girl as revenge for the alleged abortion of his unborn child.In the past, Sonal, who hailed from Uttarakhand, was living with Nikhil. However, due to frequent quarrels, she left Nikhil and started living with a friend’s family. On the day of the incident, while the family had gone to pick up their elder daughter from school, Nikhil came to their residence and murdered the two. A case was registered and a manhunt launched to arrest the accused.

Deputy commissioner of police (North) Raja Banthia said that after committing the murder, the accused boarded a train to Ranikhet but got off midway in Bareilly. From there, he made his way to Haldwani by taking lifts from passersby. Once in Haldwani, he contacted a man named Rahul through someone else’s phone. “Rahul took him to a nearby village, where he arranged for Nikhil to stay temporarily. Nikhil was planning to flee to Nepal via the Banbasa border. Acting on a tip-off, a trap was laid near Sangam Cinema. Nikhil was apprehended while trying to collect money for his escape,” the DCP said.“Nikhil and Sonal first met in Haldwani in 2023 and developed a romantic relationship. In 2024, she gave birth to a child in Haldwani. Since they were not married, they sold the baby to someone in Uttarakhand for Rs 2 lakh,” the officer added.After selling the child, both moved to Delhi and started staying in Wazirabad. Nikhil began to suspect that Sonal was having an affair with his friend named Durgesh. Later, Sonal became pregnant again but went ahead with an abortion despite Nikhil’s objections.“On the day of the incident, Nikhil went to Durgesh’s house where Sonal was staying. An argument broke out, during which he attacked her with a surgical blade. Nikhil killed Durgesh’s infant daughter as well. He believed Durgesh was responsible for the loss of his own unborn child,” Banthia said.Durgesh told TOI that Nikhil had been threatening Sonal for weeks. “She did not want to stay with him. He had some private images that he threatened to leak,” he said. Durgesh said Sonal had approached him and his wife for help, even recording a video expressing fear for her life.
