AHMEDABAD: A incident occurred late on Wednesday at the couple’s residence in NRI Tower, Bodakdev, Ahmedabad, when Yashrajsinh Gohil, nephew of Congress Rajya Sabha MP Shaktisinh Gohil, allegedly shot his wife Rajeshwari with his licensed revolver and then shot himself, police said. The couple had been married for just two months. The sequence of events unfolded as follows:

  • The couple returned home from a social gathering at around 10.30pm. Security personnel said they appeared happy upon returning and went straight to their flat.
  • While in the bedroom, Yashrajsinh allegedly checked his licensed revolver. “A bullet accidentally got fired from his licenced revolver and hit his wife Rajeshwari near her neck,” Congress spokesperson Manish Doshi told reporters.
  • Yashrajsinh then informed his mother, who was sleeping in another room, about the incident and called the 108 emergency ambulance service.
  • His mother told investigators that during this time, he asked her to step away and told her to “change clothes”. Moments later, a gunshot was heard from the bedroom.
  • Paramedics arrived and declared Rajeshwari dead. Witnesses said Yashrajsinh appeared deeply shocked by her death.
  • Moments later, Yashrajsinh allegedly shot himself in the bedroom. His mother and the medical staff found him lying in a pool of blood. He was declared dead at the scene.

Police sent both bodies for forensic post-mortem and ordered ballistic tests to determine the exact sequence of events. ACP Jayesh Brahmbhatt said, “Prima facie, it appears to be a case of accidental firing followed by suicide. However, all angles will be probed to determine whether the firing was intentional or accidental.” The couple had been living with Yashrajsinh’s mother and had no reported marital discord. They had a scheduled appointment at the passport office the following day for a planned foreign trip.
