When it came time to get their 53-man roster in order on NFL cutdown day, the New York Giants did something unexpected, but also quite sensible on August 26, 2025, by dumping QB Tommy DeVito. The undrafted free agent turned fan-favorite backup had become a feel-good story for Big Blue, affectionately known by fans as “Tommy Cutlets.”But even fan favorites sometimes find themselves on the chopping list in the cutthroat, narrow-margin world of NFL roster construction. The Giants were undefeated this preseason, winning all four games, and speculation swirled that a trade was imminent. No one came to the table, however, and the Giants decided to keep three quarterbacks on their roster.

Why the Giants chose to go with three quarterbacks rather than four

The NFL is not the 1990s anymore. With a full quarterback room, including a crowded room in New York, four quarterbacks are hard to carry on a 53-man roster. Russell Wilson was penciled in as the starter, and they’d signed Jameis Winston as a free agent to be the veteran backup with first-round rookie Jaxson Dart looking cool and accurate over the preseason. Deadline day came through, and with DeVito fighting for what would have been an incredibly improbable fourth spot and talks around potential trades falling through, New York opted to move on.

A fan favorite with one last highlight

Tommy DeVito has now played out his Giants career, but one that will be remembered. For making three consecutive starts due to injury and going 3-0 with them, Tommy established himself as a fan favorite back in early 2023 with his performance. Also Read: NFL quarterback Tommy DeVito goes viral for living with his mom—who still cook, clean, and make his bedDuring two years with the Giants, he started 12 games, threw eight TDs against three INTs, and looked strong in the preseason, completing nearly 79 percent of his passes with four touchdowns and just one interception this summer.Even with those moments, the Giants ultimately felt the depth Wilson, Winston, and Dart provided made more strategic sense for the season to come. Even players who win broad support through spirit and drive find it difficult on roster cutdown day, and DeVito’s release is a testament to this.
