Bihar SIR: With 2 days still to go, 56 lakh voters already struck off rolls

NEW DELHI: With two days to go for deadline to submit enumeration forms in poll-bound Bihar, EC said a whopping one lakh electors are “untraceable” & another 55 lakh reported as deceased, permanently migrated or enrolled at multiple places. The 56 lakh electors – who were 7% of the state’s 7.9 crore electorate as of June 24, 2025 – are “incorrectly included electors” and could have posed a risk of bogus votes in the upcoming poll, said an EC officer. The one lakh “non-existent” voters are possibly illegal immigrants who may be residing in other states, particularly neighbouring ones like Bengal, but managed to get enrolled in Bihar, possibly by corrupt means or due to lack of checks, not uncommon during summary revision of rolls, said an officer. The 56 lakh electors will not figure in the draft poll roll to be published Aug 1.Meanwhile, EC Wednesday said over 98% of Bihar’s electorate has so far been covered.
