BHOPAL: A 51-year-old man died of a heart attack in Bhopal after his eight-year-old son got stuck in the elevator due to a brief power outage on Monday night. The child came out safely in a couple of minutes when the generator came on, but the shock killed the father. The deceased, Rishiraj Bhatnagar, collapsed seconds after instructing the security guard to switch on the generator. Police feel he had a severe panic attack, as his child was trapped. Investigation officer ASI Amod Sharma said Rishiraj lived with his schoolteacher wife and two sons in a third-floor apartment in Nirupam Royal Palm Colony of Jatkhedi locality. He worked as an insurance and property broker. His elder son, Harshit, 16, recently cleared his Class 12 exams, and his younger son, Devansh, is in class 3.After dinner, Rishiraj went downstairs for a walk around 10.30pm. Finding Devansh still playing outside, he asked him to go home, said the ASI. The boy took the elevator. Moments later, the power went out. Alarmed, Rishiraj ran to the guard room and asked the securityman to switch on the generator as it was a manual one. He also asked for the keys to open the lift, say residents. After walking 25-30 steps towards the lift, Rishiraj collapsed. Electricity returned within three minutes, and Devansh was safely able to exit the lift, ASI Sharma said. However, his father lay unconscious. Harshit and some neighbours rushed him to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. When Rishiraj’s body was brought back to the colony on Tuesday afternoon, there was an outpouring of grief. Residents remembered him as a kind and active member of the colony’s management committee, always ready to help others.
