BENGALURU: A 20-year-old girl from the Central Business District (CBD) area had the shock of her lifetime when she found her private videos uploaded on social media platforms. The videos she shared with a friend had also surfaced on pornographic websites, giving her a traumatic time.
Clara (name changed), a graduation student at a private college, Tuesday approached the Central CEN crime police with a complaint against Anoop (name changed), a native of Kochi in Kerala. On Aug 18, 2023, she had shared her video with Anoop through a messaging app. She filed a complaint with police on April 26 and requested the platforms to delete the videos from online. Her complaint was then treated as a petition.In June, the videos resurfaced on various adult content websites and were also shared on social media platforms with a downloadable link. A new video was posted on these sites recently. She requested the videos be taken down, but the sites failed to comply, causing her severe mental distress.According to her, Anoop, is currently staying in Cambridge in the UK. As she shared those videos only with him, she contacted him over the phone and questioned him about the videos appearing online. Anoop claimed he had no idea how the videos were leaked.Meanwhile, she received a message from an Instagram profile named Rony Ronel, with the handle ‘@irritattor’, demanding Rs 5,000 to take down the videos. When she refused to pay him, the suspect, who has extensive knowledge of the websites where the videos are posted, threatened to spread them further. He also shared his digital payment application number 9809009810, registered in the name of Rony Tom Scaria, and asked her to make the payment. Her videos have been uploaded on 23 websites.A senior officer said the complainant provided the links to all websites. Measures are being taken to remove them. A case has been registered against Anoop and the Instagram handler under section 67A (punishment for publishing or transmitting material containing sexually explicit acts, etc., in electronic form) of the Information Technology Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) section 308 (extortion).
