NEW DELHI: Fifty-six young women were rescued from a train at New Jalpaiguri station in Siliguri late on Monday in a suspected case of human trafficking, news agency PTI reported. According to officials, the women, aged between 18 and 31, are from Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar and Alipurduar districts of West Bengal. They were allegedly promised jobs at a company in Bengaluru but were instead being sent to Bihar by the New Jalpaiguri–Patna Capital Express. None of the women had valid tickets. Officials said coach and berth numbers had been stamped on their hands.Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel became suspicious during a routine check when they noticed the large group travelling together. Questioning revealed inconsistencies in their travel plans, prompting intervention. A man and a woman accompanying the group were detained after they failed to explain why the women were being sent to Bihar despite job promises in Bengaluru. They were also unable to produce any employment documents. Both have been arrested, and the Government Railway Police (GRP) and RPF are now jointly investigating the case, with a focus on possible human trafficking. The rescued women were handed over to their families, officials said.
