Bengaluru: Daughter-in-law files dowry harassment case against filmmaker S Narayan and family

BENGALURU: Police issued notices to Sandalwood director S Narayan, his wife Bhagyavati and son Pavan after his daughter-in-law, Pavitra, filed a dowry harassment case against them at Jnanabharati police station.Pavitra, who married Pavan in 2021, sought legal action against her husband and in-laws for forcing her to bring more dowry. In her complaint, Pavitra said she was forced to work to look after her husband as he is jobless and yet to complete his education. They had moved out of her in-laws’ home a few months after marriage to a rented accommodation, but returned to the family home a year later, she said. “Since Pavan hasn’t completed his degree, he has no job. So, I started working to look after the family. Some time ago, he took Rs 1 lakh from me and Rs 75,000 from my mother to buy a car. Meanwhile, my husband’s family started Kala Samrat Film Academy, and I pledged my mother’s gold to help them financially. Later, the academy shut down. Again, they asked me for money and I took a professional loan of Rs 10 lakh. They repaid only part of the money in monthly instalments and then stopped,” according to Pavitra’s police complaint. She said her father had gifted Pavan a gold ring worth over Rs 1 lakh during marriage and had borne the wedding expenses. However, Narayan and his wife, Bhagyavati, blamed her after they had a fight a month after their son’s marriage.A senior police officer said they issued notices to Narayan and others, directing them to appear for investigation.
