At least 14 dead after consuming spurious liquor in Amritsar's Majitha block

AMRITSAR: At least 14 people have died and several others have been hospitalised after consuming spurious liquor in multiple villages under the Majitha block of Amritsar late Monday night.The affected villagers, primarily from the villages of Bhangali, Tangra, Sangha, and Marari Kalan, were rushed to the Civil Hospital in Amritsar. Six of them are currently undergoing treatment.

Victims are being transferred to the hospital

Police have launched a probe into the incident and detained five people for questioning. Two FIRs have been registered in connection with the case.“We received information around 9.30pm last night that people had started dying after consuming spurious liquor. We took action immediately and rounded up four people. We arrested the liquor supplier, Parabjeet Singh. Upon interrogation, we identified the kingpin, Sahab Singh, and have taken him into custody as well,” said SSP Maninder Singh.

“Raids are underway. Hooch manufacturers will be rounded up soon. Two FIRs have been registered under stringent sections. The civil administration and police teams are going door to door to identify more individuals who may have consumed the liquor, in order to prevent further casualties. So far, 14 deaths have been confirmed, and six people remain hospitalized. The incident has been reported from five villages of the Majitha block,” he added.Station House Officer (SHO) of Majitha police station, Avtar Singh, confirmed that most of the victims hailed from Bhangali, Tangra, Sangha, and Marari Kalan.Amritsar deputy commissioner Sakshi Sawhney called it an unfortunate tragedy. “We got to know about it yesterday night. Reports from five villages suggest that those who consumed liquor are in critical condition. The government is extending all possible help to the affected people. We are ensuring that the death toll does not rise further. We have arrested the suppliers and further investigation is underway,” she said.
