SILCHAR: A 28-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped by a group of youths in front of her fiance on the Ramnagar bypass road in Silchar after which one person has been arrested in connection with the case, police said on Tuesday.According to the survivor’s statement, the incident occurred on the night of Feb 19 when she and her fiancé were travelling in a car along the Silchar bypass. The couple stopped near the Chengkoorie Road area after her fiancé briefly stepped out of the vehicle.

The woman alleged that a group of youths arrived in another vehicle, blocked their path, dragged her fiancé a short distance away and restrained him, before sexually assaulting her one after another. She said no one was present nearby to intervene.Based on her complaint, Silchar Sadar police registered a case under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including provisions related to gangrape, criminal conspiracy, criminal intimidation, assault on a woman and dacoity.Cachar SP Partha Pratim Das said one accused has been taken into custody and efforts are on to arrest the remaining culprits. “The survivor’s medical examination has been conducted and the report is awaited. Investigation is progressing on multiple fronts,” he said.Police said the woman also alleged that the accused extorted Rs 10,000 from the couple, and investigators are probing the extortion angle alongside the primary charges.(The victim’s identity has not been revealed to protect her privacy as per Supreme court directives on cases related to sexual assault)
