Apple is reportedly working on an AI pin with cameras, microphone and speaker: Launch timeline and other details

Apple is developing a wearable AI pin about the size of an AirTag, according to The Information. The device packs dual cameras, three microphones, and a speaker into a thin, circular aluminum-and-glass shell—all designed to capture and respond to what’s happening around you. The pin has a standard lens and a wide-angle camera on the front for snapping photos and videos. Audio comes through a built-in speaker, while the three mics pick up ambient sound. There’s a physical button along one edge for controls, plus a magnetic charging pad on the back that works like an Apple Watch charger.

Racing against OpenAI’s mystery device

Apple could roll this out as soon as 2027, with plans for around 20 million units at launch. The company might be speeding up development to compete with OpenAI, which is expected to announce its own AI hardware later this year. The Information notes the project is still in early stages, though, and Apple could pull the plug if it doesn’t meet expectations. The pin would likely work with Apple’s upcoming Siri overhaul. The voice assistant is getting transformed into a ChatGPT-style AI chatbot, powered partly by Google’s Gemini model through a partnership Apple announced recently.

Learning from Humane’s costly mistakes

AI wearables haven’t exactly had a smooth start. Humane’s AI Pin—built by ex-Apple employees—crashed and burned spectacularly. The company sold fewer than 10,000 units before shutting down and offloading its assets to HP for $116 million. Reviews slammed it for sluggish performance and half-baked features.Apple’s track record with new product categories is obviously stronger, but it’ll need to avoid the privacy concerns and practical limitations that sank Humane. For now, it’s just a rumor—Apple hasn’t commented on the report.
