The condition of the crucial Vikramshila Setu—a lifeline connecting north and south Bihar—is deteriorating rapidly

BHAGALPUR: Cracks are beginning to show on the vital Vikramshila Setu, a 4.7-km bridge over the Ganga that connects north and south Bihar and sustains movement across the Seemanchal region. The structure, already burdened by relentless traffic, is now facing alarming signs of structural distress as protective walls around its pillars give way. According to recent inputs, the “false wall” designed to shield the bridge’s pillars from erosion and impact has started collapsing. The protective layer around one pillar has been completely destroyed, while similar structures around two others have been severely damaged—raising red flags about the safety of the bridge that millions rely on. Linking Bhagalpur (NH-80) with Naugachia (NH-31), the bridge is a critical corridor not just for local commuters but also for heavy commercial traffic moving from Jharkhand to Assam and other northeastern states. This constant load has long pushed the bridge to its limits, often resulting in massive traffic snarls stretching several kilometres on either end. Despite mounting structural concerns, the administration has been grappling with the bridge’s chronic congestion through strict enforcement and surveillance. CCTV cameras monitor vehicle movement round the clock, while traffic personnel are stationed at key points to prevent bottlenecks. Yet, while traffic management measures continue, the emerging structural vulnerabilities have added urgency to the situation. With visible damage to pillar protections, concerns are growing over how long the bridge can safely handle such intense pressure without major repairs or reinforcement.(With PTI inputs)
