HYDERABAD: A 45-year-old businessman was allegedly waylaid, hacked and fired upon by assailants in Jawaharnagar on Monday morning. He died on the spot. Police suspect previous enmity could be the trigger for the brutal murder. No arrests have been made till late in the night.The chilling murder, which took place in public view, was captured on a nearby CCTV camera, and the footage went viral. Venkat Ratnam, a resident of Saket Colony and who was into construction business, was riding a two-wheeler when he was followed and intercepted by a group of six individuals, who arrived in an autorickshaw and on a bike, the Jawaharnagar police said.They rammed the auto into his bike and attacked him. The victim was pushed to the ground, hacked with knives, and bludgeoned with stones repeatedly, while hurling abuses. Later, a bullet was pumped into the victim, police said. After killing Venkat, four of the accused got into the autorickshaw and left, while two others sped away on a bike.Venkat suffered injuries on his neck, wrist, ear, cheek, chest, and other areas. The incident occurred at around 7.55 am when the man was returning to his house after dropping his daughter at school.Though initially police said they suspected Venkat’s involvement in a decade-old double murder incident in Dhoolpet, they clarified later in the evening that the businessman was not involved in any murder case. Also, he had been residing in Jawaharnagar limits for the last five years.“Over 10 years ago, Venkat was associated with some individuals from Mangalhat, who had a criminal history. We are probing to ascertain whether rivals of the victim’s previous associates might have targeted Venkat,” deputy commissioner of police (Malkajgiri) Ch Sridhar told TOI. Based on the CCTV footage, police are trying to establish the identity of the assailants and apprehend them.
