Cloudburst in Uttarakhand's Chamoli: Houses, vehicles under debris; woman feared trapped

NEW DELHI: A cloudburst in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district sent debris crashing into several houses in the early hours of Saturday. A woman is reported to be trapped under the rubble, while multiple houses and vehicles have also been buried.The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for the state, warning of thunderstorms, lightning and “very intense” rain across districts including Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Nainital and Almora. The alert remains in effect until Saturday afternoon.In Pithoragarh, officials confirmed that the Thal–Munsyari and Munsyari–Milam roads had been closed due to landslides. Police have urged residents to remain vigilant in rain- and landslide-prone areas.On Wednesday, two people were killed when debris from a hillside struck the Gangotri Highway in Uttarkashi’s Dabrani area. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami described the deaths as “extremely sad news” in a post on X (formerly Twitter).Meanwhile, rescue agencies including the NDRF and SDRF are working to drain a newly formed lake in the Harsil area. Heavy rainfall and debris have blocked the Yamuna River at Syanchatti in Barkot tehsil, causing water to back up into residential areas.
