NEW DELHI: Three more people have been arrested in Assam as part of an ongoing crackdown on alleged anti-national activities, following the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam on 22 April, which left 26 people dead. With these arrests, the total has risen to 68.Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday confirmed the arrests. He said the operation would not spare anyone involved in pro-Pakistan or anti-India actions. In a post on X, Sarma said that Sribhumi police arrested Abdul Hussain and Rosid Ahmed, while Barpeta police apprehended Imran Hussain. On Saturday, Assam Police had arrested seven individuals and uncovered a racket that involved using fake SIM cards for cybercrimes and suspected anti-national activities. The SIM cards, reportedly sourced from Assam, Rajasthan, and Telangana, were allegedly used to pass on sensitive information to Pakistani agents. Among those earlier detained was Aminul Islam, a sitting MLA from the opposition party AIUDF. He was initially arrested for sedition after reportedly defending Pakistan in connection with the Pahalgam attack. Though he secured bail, he was re-arrested under the National Security Act (NSA), a law that allows preventive detention.Sarma has repeatedly said that the crackdown will continue and that “traitors” will face legal consequences. The Assam Police are monitoring online platforms closely and say they will act against any content deemed harmful to national security.
