A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 8.8 hit near Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, leading to tsunami waves hitting the coastlines of both Japan and Russia on Wednesday.The earthquake’s epicenter was about 250 kilometres from Japan’s Hokkaido island. Along with damage to ports and buildings, BNO News reported that four whales were found washed up on the Japanese coast after the tsunami waves.Videos shared on social media show the intensity of the earthquake. In some videos, furniture and lights inside buildings are seen shaking violently. In another video, large waves are seen heading towards Japan’s coast.One video also shows the moment the earthquake was picked up by Russia’s seismic monitoring centre, triggering alarms.Some footage shows buildings shaking hard, but there have been no reports of deaths so far due to the quake.Even parked cars in Russia were seen shaking violently, as powerful tremors from deep underground rocked the area. Meanwhile, Doctors in Russia continued performing surgery on a patient even as a powerful 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck, the region’s health minister said in a statement on his Telegram channel.Tsunami warnings were issued for Japan, Hawaii, and other Pacific regions. Japan’s weather agency said waves as high as 3 metres could hit coastal cities around 1:00am GMT.The US National Weather Service also issued a tsunami warning for a 100-mile stretch along Northern California’s coast, from Cape Mendocino to the Oregon border.
