Speeding car carrying wedding attendees crashed into a wall, killing nine people including the groom

MEERUT: Nine people, including the groom, were killed on Friday night when a speeding car carrying 10 baraatis crashed into a wall along the Meerut-Budaun state highway in UP’s Sambhal district, police said on Saturday. Preliminary findings indicate the crash, which took place on Friday night, might have occurred due to the driver’s negligence, though a detailed investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the accident, officers said.Sambhal SP Krishan Kumar Bishnoi, said, “The car, which was travelling at high speed towards Budaun, rammed into the wall of Janata inter college at Junawai village after the driver lost control. The impact was so intense that the front portion of the vehicle was completely crushed, trapping the passengers inside.” Authorities have yet to confirm whether all the victims were members of the same family.Police, assisted by locals, launched a rescue operation at the site. While five passengers died on the spot, four others succumbed to their injuries en route to Aligarh Medical College. One survivor is recovering at the same hospital.Those killed in the accident have been identified as groom Suraj, 20, Asha, 26, her daughter Aishwarya, 2, Sachin, 22, Komal, 15, Madhu, 18, Deva, 26, Ganesh, 2, and driver Ravi, 28. All were residents of Sambhal and Bulandshahr districts. Their bodies have been sent for postmortem.In a post on social media, PM Narendra Modi said: “Deeply saddened by the loss of lives in an accident in Sambhal. May the injured recover soon. An ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from PMNRF will be given to the next of kin of each deceased. The injured will be given Rs 50,000.” CM Yogi Adityanath has also extended his condolences to the families of the victims. Modi announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each to the next of kin of those who died.
