FARIDABAD: The body of a 25-year-old woman was unearthed by police from a 10-foot-deep pit outside her in-laws’ house in Roshan Nagar on Friday morning, almost two months after she was allegedly murdered and buried by her husband and his parents.A police team dug up the decomposed remains of Tanu Rajput from the unmetalled road outside the Roshan Nagar house after her father lodged a complaint at Palla police station. He expressed concern that his daughter may have been murdered by her parents-in-law and buried somewhere near their house.Tanu’s husband Arun Singh, who runs a garments business and has another house in the locality, had lodged a missing person’s complaint on April 24. The same day, her mother-in-law had announced in the neighbourhood that her daughter-in-law had eloped with her boyfriend. She also informed Tanu’s parents about it.Tanu is believed to have been murdered on April 25.

Preliminary probe revealed that the family had meticulously planned the disposal of her body — digging up the road outside their gate and telling neighbours they were constructing a soak pit to prevent waterlogging. They allegedly buried the body late that night and swiftly filled the pit with sand, using an earthmover and avoiding labourers the following day to complete the cover-up.“There was a wedding in our neighbourhood on April 22. The next evening, they started digging the road using an earthmover. They covered the pit with plastic sheets, claiming it was to prevent accidents. A couple of days later, they filled the pit using an earthmover,” recalled a woman from the locality. She requested not to be identified, fearing for her safety.Harikesh Tiwari, another resident, said he initially did not sense anything suspicious. “The family buried the body quite deep in the pit and filled it up quickly. Since there was no smell, no one sensed any wrongdoing. They did everything at night., and by the next morning, the road looked normal,” he added.Police swung into action when Tanu’s father lodged a complaint on Thursday evening, alleging that his daughter could have been murdered. Acting on this information, police teams began the excavation work late at night while the accused’s house was locked.“The body was in an advanced stage of decomposition with no visible injuries. We are awaiting the autopsy report to determine the murder motive,” Satya Prakash, the station house officer (SHO) at Palla PS, said on Friday.The body, the SHO added , has been transferred to the mortuary of Badshah Khan Civil Hospital in the city. Tanu — who was from Sikohabad in Uttar Pradesh’s Firozabad district — had married Arun around two years ago. After the body was discovered, an FIR for murder was registered against the husband, father-in-law, and others involved. “The accused would be arrested soon,” Prakash said on Friday.
