LeBron James found himself trending for all the right reasons earlier this week, throwing down a powerful dunk for the Los Angeles Lakers against the Houston Rockets. Of course, James often grabs headlines for several reasons. Off the court, a major development has cast doubt over a long-held ambition that stretches far beyond his playing career. The four-time champion has spent years building toward NBA ownership. That vision now faces a serious roadblock. His close business partner, Fenway Sports Group, is stepping away from potential expansion plans, dealing a blow to the project that once looked to be possible.

The latest setback centers on rising costs and shifting priorities. Fenway Sports Group had been closely linked to a potential Las Vegas franchise, but reports indicate the firm will not pursue expansion. The price tag stands as the biggest hurdle, with the league “reportedly seeking expansion fees as high as $8 billion per team,” per The Athletic. That figure changes the equation entirely. Even for a global brand like James, ownership at that level demands deep financial backing. As noted, FSG had long been viewed as the main financial force behind James’ pursuit of NBA team ownership. Without that support, the path becomes far less certain.League discussions around expansion are accelerating, yet James remains active as a player. He would need to retire before formally pursuing ownership, and with his future beyond the 2025-26 season still unclear, the window is tightening.Sources suggest the impact is significant. “With Fenway no longer pursuing NBA ownership, it is less likely that LeBron will pursue a team,” a source close to James said (via The Athletic).

LeBron James wanted to own a team for quite a while

This ambition is not new. Nearly a decade ago, James made his intentions clear. On Aug. 17, 2016, he said, “My dream is to actually own a team.” That vision only grew stronger over time, especially with a specific destination in mind.In 2022, he stated plainly, “I want a team in Vegas. I want the team in Vegas.” Years earlier, he left no room for doubt, saying, “ain’t no maybe about it, I’m going to do that s**t”.His reasoning has always gone beyond business. “Why do I want to own a team? I think it’ll be cool. I’ll stay part of the game and still be able to put people in positions of power. I’ve always loved that, putting people in a position of power to feel like they can make a change and make things happen.”As the NBA expansion is on the horizon, it was the best of times for LeBron to step in for his dream, but again, he can’t do it alone, despite a reported net worth of $1.4 billion.
