THE Subject Rankings 2026: IISc Bangalore stands alone for India in global top 100
Indian universities made a limited impact in the THE World University Rankings by Subject 2026, released on Wednesday. While institutions from the United States and the United Kingdom continued to dominate the global lists, the latest data pointed to China’s growing strength across key science and technology disciplines.For India, the picture remained uneven. The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore emerged as the only Indian institution to feature within the global top 100 in any subject category this year. It ranked under 100 in Computer Science, placing India on the global map in an otherwise thin showing.Beyond IISc, India’s presence dropped sharply down the rankings. Amity University appeared in the 251-300 band in Computer Science, followed by Jamia Millia Islamia in the 301-400 bracket, along with Symbiosis International University and Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology. No other Indian university made it to the top 100 across the 11 subject areas assessed in this edition.
India’s subject-level performance remains narrow
The subject rankings nirror a persistent challenge for Indian higher education. Despite the constant growth in research output and international collaboration, these gains have not yet translated into consistent top tier subject rankings for India.Across disciplines such as engineering, physical sciences, life sciences, and social sciences, Indian institutions continue to trail behind several Asian peers, which includes China, Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, and South Korea. THE assesses universities using 18 performance indicators, grouped under teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook. For subject rankings, the indicators are recalibrated to reflect discipline-specific priorities. Institutions must also meet minimum thresholds for research output and academic staff to be included.
Global leaders consolidate their position
At the top of the tables, Western institutions continued to hold ground. The US secured first place in eight of the 11 subject areas, while the UK led three subjects.The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) emerged as the most dominant institution overall, topping Arts and Humanities, Business and Economics, and Social Sciences. In Psychology, the University of Cambridge reclaimed the top position for the first time since 2022.
China strengthens its subject footprint
China was the standout Asian performer in the 2026 rankings. According to THE, Chinese universities claimed seven top-10 positions across subjects, up from four last year.Peking University entered the global top 10 for Computer Science for the first time, while Tsinghua University made its debut in the top 10 for Physical Sciences. Meanwhile, Asian institutions also marked a milestone in Business and Economics, with Tsinghua University, Peking University, and the National University of Singapore (NUS) all featuring in the top 10.China now has 77 universities placed in the global top 100s across subjects, up from 72 in the last year.

The 2026 subject rankings reinforce a familiar pattern. India has expanded its research base and international links, but remains concentrated around a small number of elite institutions. Outside IISc Bangalore, subject-level global competitiveness remains limited.As global rankings increasingly reward depth, discipline focus, and sustained funding, the data suggests that India’s challenge is no longer access or scale alone, but the ability to build globally competitive strength at the subject level.
