PANAJI: A man who killed a dog by running over it with his Mercedes-Benz car in 2024 was fined Rs 150 by a North Goa court. After a clip of the incident went viral, the North Goa district society for the prevention of cruelty to animals (SPCA) filed a complaint, leading to the registration of an offence under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960. Bharat Natekar pleaded guilty before the court, and stated that he was a first-time offender and that the offence took place involuntarily. His advocate said he was in the age group of 50-60 years and was the sole breadwinner, and prayed that leniency be shown.The lawyer added that Natekar showed utmost repentance for committing the crime and stated that he wished to plead guilty.The court convicted him under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, and fined him Rs 150.“Consideringthat the accused is of age group of 55-60 years, and considering the gravity of the offence, I find it suit to impose a fine of Rs 150 to be deposited in nazir’s section, which shall be credited in favour of the state,” said the JMFC, Merces.
