Winter shock in Gurgaon: Frosted roofs, frozen windscreens mark city’s coldest morning; IMD warns of severe coldwave | Gurgaon News
GURGAON: The city saw its coldest morning of the season on Monday as the minimum temperature dropped to 2.7°C from Sunday’s 4.1°C. In several areas, residents found frost on car windshields, windowpanes and rooftops. IMD said weather remained dry across Haryana, with no rainfall reported in the past 24 hours. Meteorologists said the cold spell is likely to continue over the next few days and will be felt in the mornings and late evenings across NCR and adjoining districts. “I stepped out and found my car’s windscreen covered in a thin layer of frost. We had to scrape it off before leaving,” said Garima Sharma, a resident of Sector 90. Shallow fog was reported in parts of the city early in the morning, though visibility improved soon after sunrise. “There was a thin fog layer when I woke up, but by 7am it cleared and the day turned bright and sunny,” said Amit Kumar, a resident of Sector 57.
Residents said the cold felt more biting on the city’s outskirts and in open areas. An update posted by weatherman Navdeep Dahiya on X claimed Gurgaon’s outskirts dipped to sub-zero temperatures (-1°C) on Monday morning, leading to frost as dew froze. “I visited Bandhwari early morning on Monday and reached around 7am. The temperature there dropped to -1°C as the area is an open field. Even before I entered the site, I could feel the cold intensifying, which shows how sharply temperatures dip in the outskirts compared to the city. Such a dip iin temperature is expected again on Tuesday morning, especially in open, low-lying, and less built-up pockets outside Gurgaon. Since daytime temperatures were relatively higher and wind speeds increased during the day, the conditions are favourable for stronger night-time cooling. That means the minimum temperature in these open outskirts could fall further to around -1.5°C to -2°C. Within the city, places like Teri Gram may record around -0.5°C to 0°C, while the primary weather stationat Gurgaon KVK is expected to stay relatively warmer, around 2°C,” he told TOI. An automatic weather station (AWS) in Gurgaon recorded 0.6°C, though IMD said the station had been showing abnormal readings for some time.In its advisory, IMD warned that very dense fog could disrupt traffic on highways, railway routes, and flights, leading to tough driving conditions and longer travel times. It also flagged health risks, especially for people with respiratory illnesses, noting that prolonged exposure could worsen asthma, bronchitis, and other lung-related conditions. People were advised to avoid unnecessary early-morning travel, use fog lights, wear adequate winter clothing, and stay indoors as much as possible.IMD said minimum temperatures were unlikely to change over the next three days, followed by a gradual rise of 2-4°C.On Monday, India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a warning for very dense fog, cold day to severe cold day conditions over Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh, adding that the spell was likely to continue for the next two days.“Dense to very dense fog was observed at many places on Monday too and cold day conditions were reported at isolated places. Coldwave to severe coldwave conditions are likely at a few places on Jan 13, along with ground frost, while cold day to severe cold day conditions may occur at isolated places,” said an IMD official.IMD data showed Narnaul recorded the lowest minimum temperature in Haryana at 1.2°C, followed by Bhiwani at 1.5°C and Sirsa at 1.7°C. Hisar recorded 2.6°C, while Chandigarh was at 3.3°C. Rohtak recorded 3.2°C and Ambala 4.5°C. IMD’s district-wise warning maps also reflected the severity, flagging severe coldwave and ground frost conditions in parts of Haryana. Several districts were placed under the “take action” category for Jan 12 and 13, with dense fog indicated across multiple districts in the coming days.
