BAGHPAT: A 20-year-old woman was shot dead by a 22-year-old man who later died by suicide in an apparent case of unrequited love in Uttar Pradesh’s Baghpat district on Thursday, police said.The incident occurred in Mahavatpur Bawli village under the Badaut area. The accused, identified as Satnam, allegedly opened fire on the woman and subsequently hanged himself from a tree nearby.Superintendent of police Suraj Kumar Rai said preliminary investigations indicate the incident stemmed from unreciprocated feelings, adding that police are examining all angles to ascertain the full sequence of events.According to police, the deceased woman, Guddan, daughter of Lakhmi Saini, worked as a tailor from her home. Satnam, a resident of the same village, had allegedly been in one-sided love with her for a long time and had been pressuring her to marry him.Police said that around 10.30 am, Guddan stepped out of her house to purchase some items when Satnam, who was waiting in a nearby back lane, intercepted her. An argument followed, during which he allegedly shot her in the head with a country-made pistol.Guddan collapsed at the spot with critical injuries. The accused then returned to his house and allegedly died by suicide by hanging himself from a tree, police said.On receiving information, police rushed to the scene and shifted the injured woman to a community health centre, where doctors declared her dead. A forensic team later recovered the weapon used in the crime from the spot.Both bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination, and an investigation into the incident is underway, police added.(With agency inputs)
