2 dead, 3 injured in landslide on Kedarnath trek route; boulders hit pilgrims near Junglechatti ghat, rescue operations launched

NEW DELHI: At least two people were killed and three others injured when a landslide struck the trek route leading to the Kedarnath shrine on Wednesday, police said.The incident occurred at 11.20 am near Junglechatti ghat, where falling boulders from the hillside struck pilgrims, palanquin operators and porters, as confirmed by Rudraprayag Superintendent of Police Akshay Prahlad Konde.The victims were knocked into a gorge by the debris from the landslide.A joint rescue operation was immediately initiated by police and SDRF personnel at the site.The rescue teams, including police, SDRF personnel and local residents, faced significant challenges whilst extracting both the deceased and injured from the gorge using ropes.The woman received minor wounds, but the two male victims with serious injuries were transferred to a health facility in Gaurikund, according to the SP.Authorities are working to establish the identities of those involved in the incident.Police protection remains in place as pilgrim movement continues along the route, Konde confirmed.
