2 dead, 3 critical after drunk Delhi teen rams speeding car into bicycle, shanty | Delhi News

NEW DELHI: Two men were killed and three others, including a pregnant woman and a 5-year-old child, are battling for their lives after a 19-year-old, allegedly drunk, returning from a party in Gurgaon, rammed his speeding car first into a bicycle and then into a roadside shanty in west Delhi’s Janakpuri on Thursday.

According to police, a PCR call about the accident in the Pankha Road area was received at Janakpuri police station at 3.30am. “Soon cops reached the spot and found several individuals in critical condition and transported them to hospital,” a police officer said. “At the hospital, two men identified as Aneesh Ansari (45) and Phool Singh (35), were declared dead, while three others, including a woman, Soni Devi (33), her relative a five-year-old child, and another man, Kuldeep(28) are receiving treatment for injuries.“

Deceased Singh was breadwinner of his family, 19-year-old driver apprehendedAfter the accident, the driver of the offending vehicle was caught by local residents and handed over to the police and a case was registered.“During the inquiry, it was found that the 19-year-old driver, identified as Harsh, a resident of Dwarka, was allegedly returning from a party with his friend in Gurgaon late Wednesday night and was looking for a dhaba nearby. He lost control of his vehicle due to overspeeding and hit the bicycle riders and the jhuggi,” DCP (west) Vichitra Veer said.

“He was caught by locals after the incident and handed over to the police. On medical examination, he was found to be under the influence of alcohol,” DCP Veer added.The car was reportedly being driven recklessly and at high speed when it first rammed into a bicycle carrying Ansari and his companion, both factory workers, who were returning from their shift in west Delhi’s Mayapuri. “The car hit the bicycle with great force, flinging both men onto the road. The driver then allegedly lost control of the vehicle, veered off the road, and crashed straight into a roadside jhuggi,” the senior police officer added.Inside the jhuggi, Phool Singh was asleep on the floor with his five-year-old nephew Vishal, while his pregnant wife, Soni Devi, was sleeping on a cot next to them. “Everyone was asleep. The car came with such force, it just went on top of him and the child, then hit the cot with the woman on it and only then did it stop,” said Shiva, who lives in the shanty next to Singh’s. “As soon as the car stopped, we rushed out to check the noise. Five of us had to lift the car to find him severely injured underneath.”Ankit, Phool’s nephew, added, “I helped lift the car in that moment. Everything was a blur. As soon as we got him out, we rushed them to the hospital. He has four kids of his own and takes care of all of us who had come here from our village in UP to stay with him. He helped us find jobs and sustain a living, who will take care of us now?” Soni Devi, who remains in critical condition, is just one month away from her delivery, a family member told TOI. Singh was the sole breadwinner of the family. He worked as a daily wage labourer and used to make and sell small mats for a living.The 19-year-old driver has been apprehended. He is currently unemployed, and his father works as a van driver, cops said.
